Richard Dowling.  Hailed by The New York Times as “an especially impressive fine pianist,” Richard Dowling appears regularly across America in solo recitals, at chamber music festivals, ragtime & jazz music festivals, and as guest soloist in concerto engagements with symphony orchestras. Career highlights include performances in New York at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Steinway Hall, The Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center, The Metropolitan Club, and the 92nd Street Y. Mr. Dowling has presented solo recitals in the Far East, South America, Australia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a regularly featured artist at the Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival in Missouri, the West Coast Ragtime Festival in California, and the Juneau Jazz & Classics Festival in Alaska. The National Federation of Music Clubs honored him with a special award recognizing his outstanding performances of American music. Works of Chopin, Debussy, Gershwin, Gottschalk, Ravel, ragtime, and early jazz figure prominently in his repertoire.

On Saturday, April 1, 2017, Mr. Dowling performed the complete piano works of Scott Joplin in two historic sold-out recitals at Carnegie Hall, exactly 100 years to the day that Joplin died in New York. Dowling is the first pianist to perform the complete cycle of Joplin’s 53 rags, marches, waltzes, and cakewalks in public. Throughout 2017 and into 2018 Mr. Dowling will perform over 60 all-Joplin recitals nationwide in commemoration of the centennial of Joplin’s death and the sesquicentennial of his birth. Among his many coast-to-coast engagements are concerts at the Newport Music Festival, Roswell Jazz Festival, American Jazz Museum, Historic Asolo/Ringling Theater, Museum for Making Music, and on the Pro Musica concert series in Mexico. Rivermont Records recently released Dowling’s new 3-CD set, The Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin, recorded on a magnificent Hamburg Steinway concert grand piano. Max Morath says “Richard Dowling’s mastery of the Joplin rags invokes a tenderness that charms us and a technical command that inspires our admiration.”

Reviews praise him as “a master of creating beautiful sounds with impeccable control of colors and textures,” as “a musician with something to say, the skill to say it and the magnetic power to make you want to listen,” and for giving “a superb recital that left the audience craving for more at the end.” He is a versatile musician with over a dozen CDs of classical, chamber, ragtime, jazz, and popular music. His most recent recordings include Music of Old New York and Gershwin for Two Pianos, an album featuring Rhapsody in Blue and other beloved Gershwin works with virtuoso pianist Frederick Hodges.

Mr. Dowling holds advanced degrees from Yale and the University of Texas, including a doctorate in music. As an editor for major music publishers, he has produced numerous critical performing editions of piano and chamber music by Zez Confrey, Debussy, Fauré, Gershwin, Hummel, Mendelssohn, and Ravel. As a Piatigorsky Foundation Artist since 1994, he has performed nearly 1,200 recitals across America. Mr. Dowling resides in New York City and is represented exclusively by Parker Artists, a prominent classical music management in New York. About the Artist

Dr. Dave Majchrzak started playing the piano at age 6. Although not classically trained, his early teachers instructed him in chord theory and in applying that to improvisation. At 12, Dave’s elementary school music teacher put him in touch with Steve “Stubby” Heist, a local ragtime performer at a pizza parlor. “Stubby” quickly took Dave under his wing and started him in classical Ragtime. For the next several years, Dave could be found frequenting the pizza parlor to practice his Ragtime skills. At 16, Dave began his professional career on the St. Louis Riverfront excursion boats. Playing regularly, from solo spots to 5-piece groups, helped Dave hone his improvisational skills.

Dave graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986, and began practicing in Indianapolis, IN. Soon, thereafter followed the start of his family and an eventual return to St. Louis to continue his veterinary career. It wasn’t long before the “Ragtime Bug” struck again, and Dave returned to the St. Louis Riverfront and to his spot in the Don Scherrer Banjo Bands. In that role, he has performed at every VP Fair on the St. Louis Riverfront and continues to perform on the excursion boats to this day. It was not until his entrance into the St .Louis Stompers Classic Jazz Band in 1998, that Dave got serious about music again. He currently performs with the Stompers both in St Louis, as well as at national festivals from Florida to California. While holding down his spot in the rhythm section, he also does most of the bands arrangements. Most recently, Dave has joined Red Lehr’s St. Louis Rivermen and Powerhouse Five Traditional Jazz Bands and has been honored with the late Trebor Tichenor’s spot in the St. Louis Ragtimers. Don Franz, the tuba player with the St . Louis Ragtimers introduced Dave to the late Jan Hamilton Douglas and a quick, but brief, friendship was forged. With Jan’s urging, Dave started practicing and learning new rags. That experience, and his relationship with Don Franz, led to finally meeting the great Trebor Tichenor and Al Stricker, two other members of the St. Louis Ragtimers. With Trebor’s assistance, Dave gained an invite to the Scott Joplin International Festival in 2000 and hasn’t looked back since.
Dave has appeared at the festival in Sedalia every year since and was named the 2007 Artist in Residence for the Scott Joplin Ragtime Foundation. He has also been the Artistic Director in Sedalia from 2008-2015.  He has retired and is now just one of the gang again. Simultaneously, he was the Music Director for the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival, in Eau Claire, WI, from 2010 through 2014. Dr. Dave has performed at the Blind Boone Ragtime Festival in Columbia, MO, regularly makes appearances at the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival where he was a headliner in 2007, the Grand Internatiional Ragtime Festival in Alexandria Bay, NY, and Zehnder’s Ragtime Festival in Frankenmuth, MI and at the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic in Clearwater, FL. He regularly performs at the Scott Joplin State Historic Site in St. Louis, MO. and performs concerts throughout the country.

About the Artist

Max Keenlyside is a dazzling pianist and formidable composer in the music world. Born in 1991 and starting in music at the age of ten, he has written and performed music in ragtime, stride, and classical styles, gaining a reputation as a top young artist in his field.

In 2009, Max represented Prince Edward Island in the National Artist’s Program, held in the conjunction with the Canada Games. A favorite at jazz and ragtime events around the world, he has headlined at major festivals across North America including the Scott Joplin, West Coast Ragtime, and Blind Boone festivals. While equally at home in ragtime and classical styles, he is especially lauded for his stride and traditional jazz styles of Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and James P. Johnson. Max plays with a stylistic flair and ear for detail.

Having composed since elementary school, Max has gained critical acclaim for works in many genres. He wrote concert band processional music for his own high school graduation and his “Northern Lights Rag” has become a fixture on the ragtime scene. In 2014, Max completed his Symphony No 1, Op 27 for orchestra – a 35 minute work in the grand tradition.

In addition to festivals, Max has given a program for a live audience on CBC Radio. His debut release, KeenlyStride, was issued in 2010 on the Rivermont label. This was followed by Mostly Max in 2012, featuring a plethora of Max’s original composition alongside the old classics. About the Artist

Ethan Uslan is a ragtime/jazz/silent film pianist based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is a 3-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest (yes – that really exists!) and has performed all over the USA, Europe, and Cyberspace, where his jazzed- up Für Elise has gone viral.  Aside from solo work, Ethan has appeared with symphony orchestras, jazz bands, improv comedy groups, and even a clown show.

When Ethan was 9, the Uslan family acquired a piano. After Ethan’s mom taught him the only song she knew (“Heart and Soul”), she handed him over to classical pianist Faina Litenzon, who taught him scales, how to read music, and the importance of playing with feeling.  She also taught Ethan the importance of patience and disciplined practice – traits that were completely lacking in him when he first set foot in her door.

As a teenager, Ethan wanted to try some new musical genres to supplement his classical music. He took some guitar lessons but gave up because he didn’t like having to tune it. So he found Dan Crisci, a fine jazz pianist, who taught him the fundamentals of jazz improvisation and theory. Unfortunately, it turned out that just like classical music, jazz required patience, discipline, and scales, scales, scales. But Ethan practiced diligently.

Ethan went on to study classical piano and musicology at Indiana University. His classical piano professor, Edmund Battersby, put him through the ringer, assigning him diabolical etudes that put his fingers in knots. Ethan is proud to have learned certain Chopin etudes that he had previously avoided. Meanwhile, in the classroom, Ethan had the opportunity to study the history of American popular music with Jeffrey Magee, who wrote the authoritative biography of Irving Berlin.

At some point in Ethan’s college career, he started to get obsessed with American popular music from the ragtime era through the 1940s. Why? Well, that stuff has a toe-tapping pulse, it’s unpretentious, and it’s charmingly American. All those sonatas by Beethoven and the European masters can make a New Jersey boy homesick (musically speaking). Ethan never had a teacher that specialized in ragtime piano playing. Fortunately, the other teachers in his life had given him all the tools he needed to figure it out himself.

Now, Ethan lives in Charlotte, North Carolina. He plays a lot locally but also travels to help pianos in need of syncopation treatment. His performances are filled with passion, humor, virtuosity, and a deep love for America’s rich musical past. His vast repertoire includes original arrangements of Civil-War era songs, New Orleans Jazz, 1920s Charlestons, blues, stomps, Harlem stride piano, swing, Cuban rumbas, jazzed-up versions of classical masterpieces, and one Hawaiian song called Yaaka Hula Hickey Dula.
