About the Artist

Dr. Dave Majchrzak started playing the piano at age 6. Although not classically trained, his early teachers instructed him in chord theory and in applying that to improvisation. At 12, Dave’s elementary school music teacher put him in touch with Steve “Stubby” Heist, a local ragtime performer at a pizza parlor. “Stubby” quickly took Dave under his wing and started him in classical Ragtime. For the next several years, Dave could be found frequenting the pizza parlor to practice his Ragtime skills. At 16, Dave began his professional career on the St. Louis Riverfront excursion boats. Playing regularly, from solo spots to 5-piece groups, helped Dave hone his improvisational skills.

Dave graduated from the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine in 1986, and began practicing in Indianapolis, IN. Soon, thereafter followed the start of his family and an eventual return to St. Louis to continue his veterinary career. It wasn’t long before the “Ragtime Bug” struck again, and Dave returned to the St. Louis Riverfront and to his spot in the Don Scherrer Banjo Bands. In that role, he has performed at every VP Fair on the St. Louis Riverfront and continues to perform on the excursion boats to this day. It was not until his entrance into the St .Louis Stompers Classic Jazz Band in 1998, that Dave got serious about music again. He currently performs with the Stompers both in St Louis, as well as at national festivals from Florida to California. While holding down his spot in the rhythm section, he also does most of the bands arrangements. Most recently, Dave has joined Red Lehr’s St. Louis Rivermen and Powerhouse Five Traditional Jazz Bands and has been honored with the late Trebor Tichenor’s spot in the St. Louis Ragtimers. Don Franz, the tuba player with the St . Louis Ragtimers introduced Dave to the late Jan Hamilton Douglas and a quick, but brief, friendship was forged. With Jan’s urging, Dave started practicing and learning new rags. That experience, and his relationship with Don Franz, led to finally meeting the great Trebor Tichenor and Al Stricker, two other members of the St. Louis Ragtimers. With Trebor’s assistance, Dave gained an invite to the Scott Joplin International Festival in 2000 and hasn’t looked back since.
Dave has appeared at the festival in Sedalia every year since and was named the 2007 Artist in Residence for the Scott Joplin Ragtime Foundation. He has also been the Artistic Director in Sedalia from 2008-2015.  He has retired and is now just one of the gang again. Simultaneously, he was the Music Director for the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival, in Eau Claire, WI, from 2010 through 2014. Dr. Dave has performed at the Blind Boone Ragtime Festival in Columbia, MO, regularly makes appearances at the Chippewa Valley Ragtime Festival where he was a headliner in 2007, the Grand Internatiional Ragtime Festival in Alexandria Bay, NY, and Zehnder’s Ragtime Festival in Frankenmuth, MI and at the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic in Clearwater, FL. He regularly performs at the Scott Joplin State Historic Site in St. Louis, MO. and performs concerts throughout the country.

About Stephanie Trick and Paolo Alderighi

Stephanie Trick & Paolo Alderighi met at a piano festival in Boswil, Switzerland, in 2008 and started to work together in 2011 on a four-hands piano project dedicated to classic jazz, preparing arrangements of songs from the swing era, as well as drawing from the ragtime and blues repertoire. The convention of four hands on one piano is very common in classical music but a fairly rare occurrence in jazz, due to the fact that jazz is an improvised music.
Following the 2012 release of their first recording project, Two for One, they have been invited to many festivals and events in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Their second CD, Sentimental Journey (2014), shows their commitment to the formula of four-hands duets on one piano. Their latest two albums, Double Trio Live 2015 and Double Trio Always (2016), present the classic configuration of the jazz trio – piano, bass, and drums – with piano in four hands instead of two. This combination gives Alderighi and Trick the possibility of creating arrangements of songs that include moments in trio for each pianist (which is why the project is called “Double Trio”), in which the stylistic differences between the two emerge in their individual improvisational styles, as well as moments of “tutti,” in which the four-hands duet is sustained by bass and drums. Alderighi and Trick have performed in a variety of venues in the United States and in Europe, including the Sacramento Music Festival; the West Coast Ragtime Festival in Sacramento; the Monterey Dixieland Jazz Festival, the San Diego Jazz Festival, the Kobe Jazz Street Festival in Kobe, Japan; the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland; the KIG Dixieland Festival in Dresden, Germany; the Ascona Jazz Festival in Ascona, Switzerland; the Bohém Ragtime & Jazz Festival in Kecskemét, Hungary; Teatro Dal Verme Milano, Jazzland Wien, Bülach Jazz Club, Jazz Bistro in Toronto, and other jazz clubs.

 About Bill McNally

Pittsburgh native William McNally has been musically inclined since the age of three, and began his formal piano studies at age seven. Shortly after his ninth birthday, he performed for the first time in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall as a winner of the AMSA World Piano Competition; he has since played there three more times. Anthoni Tommasini of the New York Times has called him “exhilarating” “adventurous,” and “commanding,” and Rob Haskins of the American Record Guide lauds Mr. McNally’s “crystal-clear articulation and phrasing” and his “indefinable enthusiasm.”

A multifaceted musician, Mr. McNally has been widely recognized as a ragtime pianist and composer. He is the first three-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest’ New Rag Contest, and has appeared at ragtime festivals around the country.

Currently, Mr. McNally is writing his doctoral dissertation on the reception history of revival-era ragtime composers. He has presented a paper on the transatlantic voyages of ragtime at the Society for American Music 2014 Conference.

In the spring of 2008, Mr. McNally inaugurated the Music4MS concert series, in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. He produced, directed, performed on, and wrote program notes for the series, which featured some of the brightest rising stars on the classical scene.

With his wife Daria Rabotkina, Mr. McNally studied at the Mannes College of Music, receiving Bachelors and Masters of Music degrees in piano performance. Following Mannes, he received a second Masters degree from Temple University, this time with a double major in piano pedagogy and chamber music.

Recently, Mr. McNally served as Adjunct Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence at Temple University and taught at Settlement Music School. Currently he is in pursuit of a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree at the City University of New York’s Graduate Center as a recipient of an Enhanced Chancellor’s Fellowship. He also serves on the faculty at Baruch College and has worked as a writing fellow at Queens College.

An amateur cyclist, he rode the 340-mile Great Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Washington DC in three days.

 About Bill Edwards

Bill Edwards discovered Ragtime when he was 6 years old and hasn’t been able to leave it alone since. Learning initially from records by Paul Lingle, Frankie Carle and Lou Busch, he later discovered it was available in print form and started accumulating ragtime scores in his teens. Bill started his professional career in California in the late 1970s. In the 1980s he resided part time in Durango, CO and played in the Diamond Belle Saloon at the Strater Hotel. Bill has lived in Virginia since 1986 and for many years was a featured entertainer at the Fish Market in Alexandria. Bill has many CDs and has performed with many prestigious traditional jazz bands, and worked with and opened for a variety of well-known artists, including Dave Brubeck, Al Hirt, Mel Tillis and Jo Ann Castle. Bill is an active researcher of selected composers and ragtime music and applies his passion for music on his website: www.perfessorbill.com.

Enlightenment Through Entertainment

As a scholar of Ragtime and a performing preservationist of Ragtime piano and Old-Time music I have many definitive goals in mind. First and foremost is to entertain all that come to listen. The music itself is entertainment to many, but the performer needs to strive to enhance that music and inject his best qualities into it. This will ultimately generate more interest in both the music and the performer, and provide good word of mouth for both as well. What I do on the stage is not really a lecture, not so much a seminar, and not strictly a musical show; rather, I would call it an entertainment. – Perfessor Bill Edwards

BILL will present many styles of music from the Ragtime Era and associated genres, such as Novelty and early Stride piano.

More Concert Information: http://www.perfessorbill.com/concert.shtml

Since 1984, Mr. Edwards has amassed an impressive repertoire of over 40 CD recordings,  most of which are still currently available. They cover everything from traditional classic ragtime to early popular song, and even two blues collections. There are always more recordings in the works, and a number of them have been driven and formulated by listener requests, including those generated by his Ragtime MIDI and Sheet Music Covers page. He has further amassed a collection of original ragtime compositions, including an award winning rag in 2001 titled The Necromancer (used with other pieces of Bill’s in the 2004 feature Ghosts of Edendale), his 2002 award winner The Wiener Schnitzel Rag, and his first original syncopated piece from 1985, The Hanon Rag, which premiered while he was still at Fort Lewis College. His 2014 composition Lovely Laughing Lucilletook first prize for that year’s initial Blind Boone Ragtime Festival Composition Contest.
